WhatsApp is testing a “mentions and replies” list: what it means for a business

A beta of WhatsApp for Android adds a filter that collects every group chat where someone tagged you or answered you. Here is what it does, why a business should care, and what it still leaves to you.

What happened

WhatsApp is trying out a new shortcut in its Android beta: one list that gathers every group chat where someone tagged you or replied to something you wrote. It is the app admitting something most of us already know — in a busy group, the one message meant for you is the one you scroll past.

The report comes from WABetaInfo, which follows WhatsApp betas, on 24 October 2026 (beta 2.26.42.12). Treat it as a sighting, not an announcement: WhatsApp itself has said nothing, and it is reaching only some beta testers.

Nothing changes for you today. If you are not in the Android beta, you will not see this, and nothing you use has been switched off.

How the list works

Think of it as a fourth tab next to the filters you already have.

  • It sits at the top of the Chats tab, beside Unread, Favorites and Groups. You can turn it off, or tuck it under “More” if the row is getting crowded.
  • It shows only groups (communities included) where you were tagged or someone answered you.
  • A number on it counts the chats still waiting. Open the chats and it clears; with nothing pending it shows an empty screen.
  • The point of it: the notification for a tag disappears once you open the app. The list is still there afterwards.
Where it came from: it was first spotted as a planned “smart filter” roughly three months ago and has been reshaped since, so expect the final version to look different again.

Why a business should care

Not because of the filter. Because of the habit it exposes: a lot of small businesses run their customers through WhatsApp groups, and a group has no owner.

  • The building-committee or class group. A parent asks the teacher a question at 08:10. Four people read it, each assumes someone else will answer.
  • The group with a supplier or a contractor. You tag the electrician on Tuesday; the reply is buried under 60 photos of tiles by Thursday.
  • The VIP customers' group. One person tagged you with “is it in stock?” and you saw the banner while driving.
  • The team group. An order problem is posted at 18:30. It is read by everyone and handled by nobody.

A mentions list makes the missed message easier to find. It does nothing about who is supposed to answer it. Those are two different problems, and only the first one is fixed.

What it does not do

Read this part before telling your team it has been solved.

It is on one phone, and you cannot rely on it yet

Android, beta, a subset of testers, no date. A routine that depends on it works for the person who has it and for nobody else.

It is personal

It lives on your device and shows your tags. Your colleague cannot see your list, and nothing is handed over when you are on holiday.

It does not answer, and it does not remind

It tells you something is waiting. It will not draft the reply, mark that it was dealt with, or nudge you at 17:00 that it is still open.

It does not reach your business tools

Groups are also not copied across to the WhatsApp Business Platform when you connect a number, so an assistant or a CRM that works from your customer conversations will not see them either. If a customer matters, it belongs in a one-to-one chat where it can be tracked.

The honest summary: a better way to find what you missed is welcome. It is not a way to make sure nothing is missed.

What to do this month

None of this needs the new filter. It takes one afternoon.

  • List the groups that contain customers. Not all your groups. The ones where somebody paying you can write.
  • Name one owner per group, written in the group description. “Questions here are answered by Dana.”
  • Set a reply window you can keep: same working day, say, and say so in the group.
  • Move anything that is a sale, a booking or a complaint to a private chat. A group is a good place to announce and a poor place to be accountable.
  • Try the filter if you get it, as a convenience for the owner. Not as the plan.
A quick test: ask yourself who would notice, and by when, if a customer's tag sat unanswered for two days. If the honest answer is “me, if I happen to scroll up”, that is the thing to fix.

How to read a beta report

Sites that follow app betas are useful and often early. Four questions keep them in proportion.

  • Is it released, or spotted? “Rolling out to some beta testers” is a sighting.
  • On which platform and version? Android beta is not iPhone, and not the Business app.
  • What problem is it really about? Here it is “people miss messages in groups”, not “a new filter”.
  • What does it leave to me? That is usually the part worth acting on.
