Is your WhatsApp ready for an AI agent? The ten-minute check

Five things to check before you connect WhatsApp to an AI agent, ours or anyone else’s: which app the number is on, who controls the Meta account, whether another system holds the number, what changes on your phone, and what WhatsApp charges. Ten minutes, on your own, nothing touched.

Why check before you connect

Most owners who try to put an AI agent on WhatsApp by themselves get stuck at the same step: the connection. Not because it is hard. The connection itself takes five to ten minutes. What stretches it into weeks is everything around it: an app that needs updating, a Meta account an agency opened years ago, a number an old system still holds.

This check turns those up now, in ten minutes, on your own, instead of halfway through. Most of it applies to any AI agent that connects to WhatsApp the official way, through Meta, not only to ours. And it is the same number your abandoned-cart messages, appointment reminders and lead alerts will go out on. It is also part one of our integration meeting: run it beforehand and the hour goes on the work, not on working out who has the password.

What you need for it: your phone, with the number customers write to, and ten quiet minutes. Nothing is connected or changed while you check.

Check 1: which app the number is on

The kind of connection where you keep your number and keep answering from your phone, with the agent working alongside you, runs from the WhatsApp Business app. Only from that app, and only from a recent version.

  • The number is on WhatsApp Business, not regular WhatsApp. They are two separate apps. The Business app is the one where you can set up a business profile and a catalog.
  • Version 2.24.17 or newer. The simplest way to be sure is to update it: open the App Store or Google Play, find WhatsApp Business, and install the update if one is waiting. If the store only offers to open the app, you are already on the latest version.
On regular WhatsApp? Move the number to the WhatsApp Business app first: same phone, same number, and customers keep writing to the one they already know. Do it before you connect anything, or bring it to the meeting and we do it together.

Check 2: who controls the Meta account

The number connects through a Meta business account, the free account that holds your business's presence on Facebook. The connection starts with a Facebook login in Meta's own window, so whoever does it needs access to that account.

In many businesses someone else set it up: an agency that ran your ads, a relative who helped at the start, an employee who has since left. That is normal. It only becomes a problem when you find out halfway through the connection. What to find out:

  • Is there a Meta business account at all? If there is none, that is fine: you can create one, free, during the connection itself. If you have run ads, or someone else manages your Facebook Page, ask them before you open a new one.
  • Who is its admin? Write the name down. If it is you, try logging in now, so a forgotten password turns up today and not in the middle of the connection.
  • If it is someone else, either ask them for admin access, or make sure they can be reached by phone when you connect.
Can't find out? Bring whatever you know to the meeting. Finding who holds the account is part of the check, and we work it out with you before anything is touched.

Check 3: is the number already connected somewhere?

A WhatsApp number can be connected to one platform at a time. If another system already holds yours, it has to be released before an AI agent can connect.

This mostly matters if you have tried something before: a chatbot, a WhatsApp marketing tool, a provider an agency signed you up with. Signs to look for:

  • Replies go out that nobody on your team wrote, from an old bot or an automation.
  • You once paid a provider for “WhatsApp API” or a WhatsApp chatbot, even if you have stopped using it.
  • The number does not work in the WhatsApp Business app at all, because a provider moved it entirely into its own system.
  • The app shows a connection. In the WhatsApp Business app, the place to disconnect from a platform is Settings → Account → Business Platform. If a connection shows there to a system you no longer use, that is the one to release.
Releasing a number depends on someone else, usually the provider that holds it or whoever signed up with them. That is why it is worth starting today: ask them in writing to disconnect the number, and keep their reply.

Check 4: what changes on your phone

You keep using the WhatsApp Business app exactly as before, and the agent works on the same number alongside you. A few features cannot run in both places at once, so they switch off. Better to hear it now than from a customer next week.

Keeps working:

  • Your 1:1 chats, now mirrored between your phone and the agent
  • Contacts and history: if you choose to share history, your contacts and the last six months of chats sync over
  • Calls, your catalog and your business profile: unchanged

Switches off or changes:

  • Disappearing messages, view once and live location turn off in 1:1 chats
  • Broadcast lists become read-only, and you cannot create new ones
  • Group chats keep working in the app, but the agent does not see them
  • Linked devices (you can keep up to four) unlink once when you connect, and need linking again. WhatsApp Web and desktop keep working; the Windows and WearOS apps do not.

The question to ask yourself: does anyone in the business rely on one of these? A broadcast list that goes out every week, someone who answers from the WhatsApp app on a Windows computer, a WearOS watch. If so, plan the alternative before you connect, not after.

Connected does not mean answering. The agent starts muted: it sees every message and answers nobody until you decide.
Changed your mind? You can always disconnect from the app itself: Settings → Account → Business Platform → Disconnect. The number goes back to working in the app only.

Check 5: what WhatsApp charges

From 1 October 2026 WhatsApp charges businesses for ordinary replies, not only for templates. That includes every reply an AI agent sends for you, so it is worth knowing what it comes to for you before an agent starts answering.

  • About 1.6 agorot a reply, in Israel. Meta's rate is $0.0053 per message you send, charged only when it is delivered.
  • What customers send you is free, and that is not changing.
  • A conversation that starts from an ad gets 72 free hours. When someone messages you from an ad that clicks to WhatsApp, or from the button on your Facebook Page, and you reply within 24 hours, your messages are not charged for 72 hours.
  • No volume discount on replies. Sending more does not make each one cheaper.

The check itself: count the messages your business sent on WhatsApp last month and multiply by 1.6 agorot. That is roughly what it would come to if an agent sent every one of them.

What sets the bill is the number of replies, not the number of customers. You pay per message, so an agent that answers in one message instead of three costs a third as much. Worth asking of any agent before it answers for you: does it say it in one message, or in three?

The full breakdown, with a calculator for your own numbers, is in WhatsApp starts charging for replies on 1 October.

What to do with the result

Ten minutes in, you are in one of three places.

  • All clear. The Business app is up to date, you (or someone you can reach) can get into the Meta account, no other system holds the number, and nothing on the list of changes worries you. You are ready: book the integration meeting and spend the whole hour on the work, or connect it yourself with the step-by-step in Connect WhatsApp.
  • One thing is stuck. Each of these has a clear next step: move the number to the Business app, line up whoever manages the Meta account, or ask the old provider in writing to release the number. Start it today, because it is the part that depends on other people.
  • Not sure. That is fine. Bring it to the meeting: the first fifteen minutes are there for exactly this check, done together before anything is touched.

In the meeting, the WhatsApp check comes first, then we find out which of your systems can connect, and then we do the work. The whole hour is laid out in The integration meeting. And if you have ten more minutes, pick the first job you would hand over: Which job to automate first.
